This work is a history of mediæval political theory in the west, and of its medieval and modern dressings. This is the first comprehensive treatment of the subject; it is an investigation into a hitherto neglected field; and it brings together under one cover all the scattered matter bearing on the subject. The author has sought to do more than merely describe or summarize his material: he has made a critical examination of each topic, and has supplemented such analysis by criticism of the authorities where necessary. The student, for whom this work is primarily designed, will find critical discussions of important principles, with references to other authorities for further study.
