The Jews, a race of striving, tenacious people. Treitschke says that the Jews have been the object of envy and hatred from all their neighbors. They have been persecuted, enslaved, and exterminated. All this does not disturb their eternal optimism. The Jewish religion is a strong moral power, one of the few in these times that can still move men to tears and sacrifice. It has gained in-depth what it has lost in universality; and we may well ask whether, if they had remained the chosen people and not become dispersed among other nations, they might not have remained without rivals as the most powerful factor in civilization.
