Description:

James Russell Lowell was an American poet, essayist, and critic. He is famous for his poem "My Study Window" which is widely anthologized in the United States. Lowell graduated from Harvard University in 1836 with A.B. and A.M. degrees in classics and mathematics, respectively. In 1837 he became professor of modern history at Harvard and later served as a secretary of legation to France, England, and Germany. An advocate of abolitionism, Lowell wrote numerous essays on the subject published in The North American Review or published separately by an abolitionist publishing house established by him in 1847, where he edited its journal until it folded in 1853.
