Theodore Roosevelt's first book, Hunting Trips of a Ranchman, was such an instant success that he wrote and published four more by the time he left office in 1909. In this two-volume set, Roosevelt recounts his hunting experiences from the age of eighteen when he started working as a cowboy for an uncle on the Dakota frontier to his stint as Division Engineer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during the Spanish-American War and his subsequent service as Assistant Secretary of the Navy during President McKinley's administration. The second volume covers Roosevelt's western ranching experiences with vivid descriptions of buffalo hunts, bear encounters, and cattle drives.
