List of Claims Filed with the Department of State: Growing out of the Acts Committed by the Several Vessels, Which Have Given Rise to the Claims Generically Known as the Alabama Claims
The United States and the British Government have agreed to refer to a commission of five persons, to be appointed by their respective Governments, for the purpose of examining and adjusting all the matters in difference between the two Governments and for framing and submitting propositions and plans touching such adjustment. The Alabama claims were a series of diplomatic confrontations between the United States and Great Britain arising out of the Civil War. The actions initiated by the United States in 1869 included diplomatic efforts, arbitration rulings, and eventually military intervention. After three years of complex negotiations, the US was awarded $15.5 million in gold for damages suffered as a result of British blockades that cut off Southern ports during the war.
