Past Hours, in Two Volumes, Vol. II Adelaide Sartoris (Adelaide Kemble) is a collection of letters from a woman to her lover. In Volume II, she reads his replies and rejoins him on the same day. As they correspond over the course of a year, their relationship deepens and changes in ways both expected and unforeseen. The correspondence starts in 1875 when Adelaide is traveling abroad while her husband is at home in Philadelphia. When she returns, she meets a neighbor named Charles Evans who becomes her close friend and confidant. Ultimately he becomes more, but the decision to make the relationship sexual or not lies solely with Charles because Adelaide cannot marry again without risking losing custody of her daughter from her previous marriage.
