Byrne, Surgeon, U.S. Army, respectfully submits the following proceedings of a court-martial for his trial held at Fort Moultrie, S.C., on March 24th, 1859, to be read before the Medical Society of South Carolina: "The Court having heard the evidence in this case and the arguments of counsel upon it are unanimous of the opinion that the defendant is not guilty and he is therefore acquitted." As a surgeon, Byrne was respected by his peers and superiors. But on March 24th, 1859, he faced a court-martial for the charges of disobeying orders and conduct unbecoming an officer and gentleman. The proceedings are recorded in this rare book from 1859.
