The writer was born in Tochester, Northamptonshire on November 21, 1854. He attended Kingswood School in Bath, Somerset, and Didsbury, then graduated from Manchester College and joined the Wesleyan ministry in 1875. After he decided to marry Jane Powell. They were raising three daughters and three sons. In 1887 Dawson left for John Wesley Church in London, which was quite a turning point in his life. He found it extremely discouraging to serve an impoverished parish in south London. Later he was writing: "Around these dreary dwellings of the dead were narrow streets and muddy rookeries, infested with crowds and abandoned humans."
