Annie Fellows Johnston was an American writer and illustrator of children's books. Her most famous work is the Little Colonel series. In this children's classic, tough-minded Alice and her father had not spoken for five years when he sent her a surprise invitation to visit him in Arizona. Her father, who was once a Confederate colonel, has become a rancher in Arizona, where he has found peace and happiness with his family. Alice's feelings about her father were mixed, but she agreed to go because she wanted to see for herself if he had changed. When she arrived at his ranch, she found that life there was different from anything she had ever known before.
