Description:

John Ormsby is a Scottish explorer and author. He was born in 1868 to a wealthy family, who were staunch Presbyterians. In 1887, he went to the University of Edinburgh to study divinity. But instead he spent his time climbing mountains and exploring remote parts of Scotland. His first expedition in 1889 took him to the pyramid-shaped peak, Lochnagar, in northern Scotland. The following year he became the youngest person to reach the summit of Ben Nevis. In 1893 John Ormsby became one of the few people ever to visit Antarctica during winter when he set out on an expedition led by Norwegian explorer Carsten Borchgrevink.
