The story of the General Library of the University of Michigan starts almost with that of the story of the University itself. John Monteith, the president of the Catholepistemiad or the University of Michigania, mentioned in his private journal, Detroit library expanded a part of the University construction founded in 1817. In the Act of 1837, which was produced for the organization of the University in Ann Arbor, it was postulated that as much as it was necessary, the fees collected from students should be increased the keeping of houses in good health, and money should be used to increase the Library. In 1837 the Reverend Henry Colclazer was elected to the position of librarian. He kept his office until 1845. During the next eleven years, the librarian's duties have been taken on brief periods by multiple faculty members.
