Description:

The Zoölogical Society of Philadelphia, on May 15, 1866, made its first expedition into the Peruvian Andes. This was part of an ambitious campaign to chart the distribution of forest mammals in both North and South America. The work began with a journey across northern Peru via the Viceroyalty of Peru. After crossing the Andes at Tacna, they traveled onward to Lake Titicaca for quinine production before heading south along the Great Andes to Lake Titicaca itself. They had only one objective: explore this lake for its rich fauna and flora. Upon reaching Titicaca, they found that it boasted a unique fauna consisting of many new species of mammals not known anywhere else in the world.
