Anthony Trollope is widely regarded as the founder of the Victorian novel. This is the second volume of Trollope's Chronicles of Barsetshire, an epistolary novel, in which the majority of the letters are written by various people living and working at Barchester Cathedral. Vol. II. The first volume, The Warden, dealt with the struggles of a country clergyman against his bishop to gain control of an ancient cathedral. The second volume follows the adventures of characters who are not stereotypical of Victorian novels. It deals with the struggle for power among the bishops as they vie for control over their dioceses and parishes.
