Description:

Sidney Clopton Lanier was a musician, poet, and author from America. Lanier was performing in the church as an organist and also worked as a teacher and as a lawyer. He served in the States Army, worked on a blockade-running ship, and then was imprisoned. When writing poems he sometimes, though not exclusively, used many dialect words and often heightened, but archaic American English. His greatest poems are Revenge of Hamish, The Marshes of Glynn and Sunrise. He developed the unique style of poetry that was greatly admired by his colleagues: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Bayard Taylor, Charlotte Cushman, and other significant poets and critics of the day.
