L'Allegro, Il Penseroso, and The Hymn on the Nativity

John Milton is one of the greatest minds of his time. He was a brilliant poet, a political philosopher and a man of letters. The first couple of verses of The Hymn on the Nativity, John Milton's sublime masterpiece, have a simple message: God created the world, and then He brought it back to life. That's one way of looking at it. But Milton also wrote a second version, which reads: "God created this world / And all that lives in it.". The subject of the three poems is, in a sense, the same as that of the drama: the birth of Christ. The plays are, therefore, not only rhythmical and melodious but also highly symbolic.
