Description: The Memoirs of a Physician is an 1838 novel by French author Alexandre Dumas, père. Originally conceived as the opening volume in an epic series, the novel was completed when Dumas was imprisoned in La Force prison in Paris during the Reign of Terror and published after his release. Born near Paris, France on July 24th 1768, Joseph Balsamo is a young man with a mysterious past who starts out as a swindler and confidence trickster but later becomes a powerful figure in European politics. He is able to predict future events before they happen and has vast knowledge of chemistry and physics that seem to defy nature. In order to hide his true identity from others he takes on various disguises, most notably becoming Count Alessandro di Cagliostro.
