What if, after a lifetime of sinful living, an old but repentant man could make a single phone call to God and be granted eternal life? What if, before the call could be made, the man died unexpectedly? The saints' everlasting rest is a probing exploration of three possible outcomes to this dilemma. In the first story, Baxter's conscience finally leads him to penitence. Baxter dies in peace and his soul is welcomed into heaven. In the second story, Baxter's soul is tormented by his sins for eternity. And in the third story, Baxter does not die at all: he endures a nagging emptiness for decades until he finally recognizes that it was never too late for him to repent and receive redemption.
